the cell presents the return of flutist/composer and Sunnyside Records Artist, Jamie Baum, who by-the-way was just voted #2 "Flutist of the Year” in the 2019 DownBeat Critics Poll! Jamie made her debut at the Cell in May 2018 with her award-winning compositional muse of 20 years, The Jamie Baum Septet+, to a standing-room only crowd, garnering an enthusiastic reception and standing ovation. Their appearance was part of a year-long celebration of the release their 4th CD, Bridges.

Offering another side of her talents and imagination, she’ll introduce us to Short Stories. This group's emphasis is on improvisation with Baum's inspiration coming from the short but eloquent, harmonic and motivic-packed compositions by such jazz icons and important early influences such as Wayne Shorter and Miles Davis, and the grooves and melodies of more contemporary artists. Baum strives in this setting to compose or arrange 'short stories' for this unique instrumentation and top-flight group of musicians, with each short composition created to explore a particular vibe or concept.

“Ms. Baum brings a remarkable balance of fluidity and restless creativity to her work as a post-bop flutist and composer. She plays with a range of ensembles, but it’s hard to beat (Short Stories).”

– Giovanni Russonello, The New York Times

“Jamie Baum exhibits remarkable artistic facility as composer/arranger/bandleader/flutist.”

– Dan Ouellette, DownBeat

“She’s a commanding soloist with an understated soulfulness.”

– Kirk Silsbee, Jazziz
