“…It will be an evening of sublime beauty and no doubt unexpected transcendence.” —Dan Ouellette, ZEALnyc
“…pianist James Hurt, whose eccentricities make him important. Mr. Hurt sounds as if he has absorbed Elmo Hope and Herbie Nichols and early Cecil Taylor, but he has added his own baroque sense of ornamentation, building static piles of rumbles and glittering figures. And he's percussive, sitting on repeated notes until drama springs from his improvisation…” – THE NEW YORK TIMES
“…Hurt, yet another pianist from Memphis, has an exploratory personality and sounds resolutely like himself…But it's his early training as a drummer that makes him distinct...Mr. Hurt's sure sense of time allowed outrageous play on his part, rhythmic gestures that would have sent most bands spinning out of control. But he always brought the music back down to a compact, graceful buzz, and the band members, swinging effortlessly and regularly moving tempos around, were thinking alike, using change as a way of marking off the passage of time.” – THE NEW YORK TIMES
Any opportunity to hear, what Peter Watrous (NY Times) once called an “uncompromised vision” should be seized. That vision belongs to the great JAMES HURT. On Saturday, November 7th, the Cell Theatre welcomes the composer, instrumentalist, and living artist for a night of creative improvisation entitled Alone Together - and his brothers in arms; saxophonist Abraham Burton, drummer Eric McPherson, guitarist Marvin Sewell and veteran instrumentalist and visual artist Dick Griffin on trombone.
Alone Together, the theme of program for the night, features artists in both solo and collective improvisational formats coupled with original art by Dick Griffin. While these artists have all been a part of the creative jazz scene performing with jazz luminaries as both sidemen and leaders this evenings performance brings them together for a common objective-to have their artistic voices heard devoid of any aesthetic suggestion through pure self-expression.
Alone Together welcomes everyone to experience the evening’s (and quite possibly the world’s) desire for deep exploration vs. regurgitation. the cell itself will function as a virtual portal for both artist and listener to be transported.
Alone Together is an affirmation of how both interdisciplinary arts and the human experience are passionately intertwined in their attempts to weave a tapestry of beauty.
DON'T MISS OUT, HOT NIGHT!!
